Antimicrobial Peptides: Nature's Answer to Antibiotic Resistance

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the most pressing challenges in healthcare, food safety and consumer products. Conventional antibiotics usually target enzymes or metabolic pathways inside the cell, and bacteria can adapt to them through genetic mutation. This is driving a search for fundamentally different approaches.

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are part of nature's first line of defense, and they work in a different way.

How AMPs work
  • AMPs are positively charged, so they are strongly attracted to the negatively charged membranes of bacteria.
  • Their amphipathic structure lets them insert rapidly into the lipid bilayer and form nanopores, leading to leakage and cell lysis.
  • Because they physically damage bacterial structures, the likelihood of resistance developing is reduced.
  • They are active against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, fungi and biofilm-forming organisms.

Promecens has developed and characterized two proprietary AMPs that demonstrate 99.9% efficacy against multidrug-resistant pathogens, including MRSA and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. They are also biocompatible, biodegradable and stable across a range of temperature and pH conditions.

Where AMPs can make an impact
  • Healthcare: wound care dressings, implant and medical device coatings, and alternatives to antibiotics in chronic wound care.
  • Cosmetics and dermatology: natural preservative replacement and acne-focused formulations.
  • Food and packaging: antimicrobial films and natural preservatives that help reduce spoilage and food waste.
  • Agriculture and environment: biocontrol agents, water treatment and biofilm control.

Safer, more sustainable antimicrobial protection is possible.

By combining strong efficacy with biodegradability and low cytotoxicity, AMPs are emerging as a next-generation tool for controlling infection and contamination while protecting the planet.
